PM Surya Ghar is a recently launched scheme by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This scheme is dedicated to installing Solar Rooftop systems on the houses of people belonging to lower and medium income group. Initially the scheme was announced on January 2024 with name “Suryoday Yojana” but it was finally launched on 13th February 2024 as “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana”.

The cabinet has finally approved the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana on 28th February 2024.
Surya Ghar Solar Rooftop scheme is going to make people self dependent for electricity generation. The beneficiaries have the opportunity to earn extra income under this scheme.
The scheme has a target to benefit 1 Crore Families. This scheme is going to reduce the burden of monthly electricity bills by promoting the use of Solar Rooftop panels in common households.
This new solar rooftop scheme is going to bring a solar revolution in India. If you join this scheme, not only you get free electricity but you can make money by selling additional units.
The beneficiaries of the scheme get 300 free electricity units per month.
As per the recent announcements, government will provide 60% subsidy to install solar rooftop systems. Also, the remaining 40% amount will be provided as loan.
During the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, the official portal was also unveiled. You can access it on pmsuryaghar.gov.in, the National Portal for Rooftop Solar.
Suryoday Yojana to PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
Initially the name of the scheme was Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana however it was later changed to PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Any references to Suryoday Yojana are therefore directed to Surya Ghar Muft Bijli scheme only.
When the Prime Minister tweeted about this new Solar Rooftop Scheme for the first time on 22nd January, he introduced this scheme as “PM Suryoday Yojana”, however later on, on 13th February this scheme was launched with the name PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Finally on 28th February 2024, the Surya Ghar Scheme got approval from the Cabinet. So, if you come across PM Suryoday Yojana, it simply means we are referring to Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Objective
Huge Electricity bills are a burden for people belonging to lower and medium income group. With the costs of everything going up, relief in electricity bills is a great benefit for people. The Surya Ghar scheme ensures that the beneficiaries get 300 free electricity units which is essentially zero bill because belonging to lower and medium income groups usually not spend 300 units per month.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Eligibility Criteria
As the scheme is just announced, detailed guidelines will be available very shortly. At this time, we only know that this scheme will benefit the middle class and poor families. As soon as Suryoday yojana guidelines are released, there will be clarity on the terms and conditions related to eligibility criteria. However, following eligibility conditions are known :
- Applicant should be Indian Resident.
- Age of the applicant should be more than 18 Years.

PM Surya Ghar Solar Panel Yojana Application
Every interested beneficiary wants to know about the application process. Although detailed guidelines are not available yet, we do have relevant information from the national rooftop portal.
Application Procedure
The final approval for installation of rooftop solar under Suryoday scheme is given after the following seven steps:
Step 1 : Registration
The first step is to sign up on the official website.
Step 2 : Apply for Solar Rooftop
In this step, registered user logs in to the website and submit the online application.

Step 3 : Technical Feasibility Approval/TFR
Now, the application reaches the Technical feasibility approval stage. Here the concerned official checks the submitted details and if found in order, the application is passed to next stage. After the approval, the applicant needs to choose the desired vendor for installation. Then, the concerned vendor will complete the installation after the payment.
Step 4: Submission of Installation Details
At this stage, the applicant submit the installation details on the website.
Step 5: Inspection
After the installation information reached the concerned team, the visit the installation site for inspection and check if everything is in order or not. If all goes well, net meter will be installed.
Step 6: Project Commissioning Status
After the inspection and net-metering, the installation details are approved online by the concerned official. Then, an online commissioning certificate is generated. Applicant can view this commissioning certificate online in their account.
Step 7 : Subsidy Request
Once the applicant has the commissioning certificate, he/she can raise only subsidy request by providing bank details alongwith cancelled cheque or passbook.
If all information is found in order, the subsidy amount is transferred to the bank account of the applicant. This usually happens within 30 days of subsidy request, provided the given details are correct.
